Audio restoration is a generalised term for the process of removing imperfections (such as hiss, impulse noise, crackle, wow and flutter, background noise, and mains hum) from sound recordings. Audio restoration as we do it, is on on a digital representation of the recording using a computer (such as an AIFF or WAV file).

Modern audio restoration techniques are usually performed by digitizing an audio source from analog media, such as lacquer recordings, optical sources and magnetic tape. Once in the digital realm, recordings can be restored and cleaned up using dedicated, standalone digital processing units such as declickers, decracklers, dehissers and dialogue noise suppressors, or using digital audio workstations (DAWs). DAWs can perform various automated techniques to remove anomalies using algorithms to accomplish broadband denoising, declicking and decrackling, as well as removing buzzes and hums. Our audio engineers and sound editors use DAWs to manually remove “pops and ticks” from recordings, and the latest spectrographic ‘retouching’ techniques allow for the suppression or removal of discrete unwanted sounds. DAWs are capable of removing the smallest of anomalies, often without leaving artifacts and other evidence of their removal. Although fully automated solutions exist, audio restoration is sometimes a time consuming process that requires skilled audio engineers with specific experience in music and film recording techniques, skills that Acid Bizarre possesses.

Audio restoration is a subjective process, and there are many strategies or perspectives that the audio engineer or sound editor can employ. The archival perspective says that audio restoration should restore the recording to its original condition, while the commercial perspective says that the recording should be both restored and enhanced to appeal most immediately with modern audiences.

Audio Restoration Process

Our process consists of two stages:

1) Reformatting – The first step towards preserving your audio is to convert it to digital. Reformatting is an absolutely critical step, as it preserves the material as it was transferred at this point. The transfers are always done “flat”, i.e., with no extra processing, so that subsequent generations have the audio preserved in whatever state it was in at the time of the transfer.

2) Audio Restoration – The next step after reformatting should you choose to take it, is restoration. It’s a more involved process, and will cost more, but restoration can help your materials sound better than they ever did.

We use an EQ, as this can help to sweeten and re-balance sounds, to draw out the frequencies you want emphasised and tame the ones you want backed off. For plosives and sibilance, de-essers or compressors with very precise frequency settings are ideal tools, while more generic compression and limiting can help to pull out elements of older recordings that you didn’t know were there.  Restoring audio is as much an art as a science, and each project we work on will has its own specific requirements. With clever and careful use of EQ, compression and perhaps other tools such as de-essing and stereo imaging, we can take a less than perfect recording and make it sound significantly better. When it comes to fixing distorted or clipped recordings, the going can be even tougher as we then have to identify and fix each one by hand, but if re-takes are not possible, it’s good to know you have the option. We have developed the skill and patience, to almost rescue anything.

Each restoration project can be very unique and require different levels of audio skills. But, rest assured at Acid Bizarre we are able to handle any restoration project to a new completed set of digital masters.  We allow you to be the judge as to how far you want us to go with the use of our tools.  Some clients like remnants associated with analog audio left, where others want their vinyl to sound as close to today’s digital sound as possible.  It’s for you to decide.
